The EuroVelo 15 leads through the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley for around 50 kilometers, between mountain scenery and river landscapes — from Feldkirch to Gaißau. The route starts at Egelsee, on the border with Liechtenstein, continues along the banks of the Ill to Illspitz, and then runs along the Alpine Rhine through quiet riparian forests and wide plains. Along the 'old Rhine' between Lustenau and Höchst, nature, culture and views take turns: historic townscapes, protected river landscapes and constant views of the mountains. Towards the end of the route, the Rhine flows into Lake Constance — an atmospheric moment in a peaceful, diverse day's journey.
From the medieval old town of Feldkirch with its narrow alleyways and the Schattenburg castle, the route begins by leading through the verdant Illauen valley to Illspitz, where the Ill and Alpine Rhine meet. The most impressive section of the route begins here: downstream through the wide Rhine valley, surrounded by meadows, rows of poplar trees and gentle bends of the old course of the Rhine. In Lustenau, Austria's largest market community, cafés and small museums offer an opportunity to linger before the route continues towards Höchst. There, nature observation points and wooden walkways line the banks, which gradually merge into the Rhine delta — a biodiverse nature reserve with a view across Lake Constance all the way to the Swiss Alps.
With the new connection through Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein, EuroVelo 15, the international Rhine Cycle Route, can now be experienced in six countries — from where the Rhine begins in Andermatt to the North Sea. Anyone cycling here will discover the essence of this great European route in a short distance: water, vastness and the quiet coexistence of nature and culture.
