About us

The idea EuroVelo

The EuroVelo network, initiated by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) in 1995, includes 17 long-distance cycling routes crossing Europe. Once completed, the network will cover around 90,000 kilometers, offering cyclists a unique experience.

EuroVelo is largely managed on a volunteer basis by Europe’s cycling associations, with occasional support or sponsorship. In Austria, EuroVelo-standard signage began in Lower Austria in 2005 and is now consistently marked throughout the country, except in Upper Austria. Many cycling maps already include EuroVelo routes.

In Austria, existing major cycling routes were integrated and connected as EuroVelo routes. A notable exception is “EuroVelo 13 – Iron Curtain Trail,” newly developed after 2000. As in all European countries, responsibility for EuroVelo cycling route infrastructure lies with national or regional authorities.

The term EuroVelo

In Austria, the term “EuroVelo” does not replace the existing names of cycle routes but indicates that these routes are part of the trans-European cycling network.

Responsibility for the infrastructure of EuroVelo cycling routes in Austria lies with the relevant public authorities, typically local authorities, consistent with practices in most European countries. Visitor information and marketing for the EuroVelo routes are managed by regional tourism organizations.

“EuroVelo” is a registered trademark of the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF). Therefore, the term “EuroVelo” and the EuroVelo logo may only be used with prior permission from the EuroVelo Management Team of the ECF.

EuroVelo Austria

In Austria, EuroVelo is coordinated voluntarily by a small team from Radlobby Austria, focusing primarily on networking and providing relevant information.

Responsibility for infrastructure along the EuroVelo cycling routes lies with local municipalities and regional authorities, consistent with most European countries. Visitor information and marketing are managed by local tourism organizations.

As the “National EuroVelo Coordinator,” we’re happy to forward your feedback or complaints. Please send the location details (GPS coordinates), photos, and a brief description of the issue to [email protected].
